BELECTRIC strengthens its return to the UK with another large-scale project

  • Construction of a 28.5 Megawatt Peak (MWp) solar farm for Luminous Energy
  • BELECTRIC underlines its recent return to the United Kingdom as EPC service provider

Kolitzheim (Germany) – BELECTRIC, Member of Elevion Group, strengthens its recent return to the United Kingdom (UK) as an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) service provider. The solar energy specialist partners with Luminous Energy to install a large-scale solar power plant near Norwich in England.

After announcing the signing of EPC contracts for two solar farms with more than 100 MWp of solar capacity in the United Kingdom last December, BELECTRIC expands its British EPC pipeline by another 28.5 MWp and hereby underlines its presence in the market. The solar energy specialist has been awarded the contract to construct Bracon Ash solar farm near Norwich in Norfolk (England) for Luminous Energy, an established UK-based renewable energy and battery storage developer. The solar power plant is expected to be commissioned in the summer of 2024 and generate enough electricity to power more than 9,500 households annually. To reach the highest yields possible in a country with less solar radiation than many other European markets, BELECTRIC relies on cutting edge technology with bifacial n-type modules. Bifacial cells are able to absorb solar radiation from the front and the back of the module. N-type cells are built upside down compared to typically used solar cells, with the negatively doped side serving as the basis. This leads to higher efficiency and increases the solar farm’s profitability.

David Bryson, COO of Luminous Energy, said: “We are delighted to continue our contribution to the fight against global climate change with the construction of Bracon Ash Solar Farm, which aligns with South Norfolk Council’s emissions reduction goals as well as the national target to achieve net zero by 2050. It also demonstrates our dedication to working closely with local communities. The final design, which incorporates community feedback is expected to deliver a 203% net biodiversity gain.»

BELECTRIC first joined forces with Luminous Energy in 2013 when the two companies signed a joint development agreement and subsequently went on to develop a number of successful projects together. Both firms are delighted to be partnering together again ten years later. BELECTRIC will also oversee operations and maintenance of Bracon Ash solar farm once fully constructed.

«We are excited to once again collaborate with Luminous Energy on the Bracon Ash Solar Farm project. This partnership is a testament to our expertise in the international solar sector and history of working successfully together,» comments Barry Bennett, Managing Director of BELECTRIC subsidiary BELECTRIC Solar Ltd. UK.

BELECTRIC adds four more solar farms to its Dutch portfolio

  • BELECTRIC expands its partnership with global renewable energy company Low Carbon
  • Four new solar projects with a total capacity of more than 75 Megawatt Peak (MWp) in the Netherlands
  • Focus on the conservation of the soils on site

Kolitzheim (Germany)  – BELECTRIC, Member of Elevion Group, is set to construct four more solar farms in the Netherlands with a strong focus on the conservation of the soils on site. With the new projects, BELECTRIC expands its partnership with global renewable energy company Low Carbon.

With four solar power plants already under construction for its customer Low Carbon, BELECTRIC has now secured another major contract with the global renewable energy company in the Netherlands, where they will construct four more photovoltaic plants with a total installed capacity of over 75 Megawatt Peak (MWp). The solar farms located in the Dutch provinces of Gelderland, Limburg and Utrecht will cover the annual demand of around 50,000 households with green electricity. On the project site in Gelderland, BELECTRIC will also collaborate with a Dutch university to test an agrivoltaics system that will enable renewable energy and food to be produced on the same site and minimise land use. The four projects are due to be commissioned by early 2024.

Justin Thesiger, Managing Director of Global Supply Chain at Low Carbon, commented: “We are delighted to be expanding our partnership with BELECTRIC through this EPC agreement for a further four solar projects. The Netherlands is a key market for Low Carbon and this latest milestone will help us to build momentum towards achieving our strategic goal of creating 20 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. As we aim to make further progress on this goal, we will look to grow our presence in Europe by entering key markets like Germany where we continue to scale our operations.»

BELECTRIC’s approach focuses on the conservation of the soils on site. Three of the construction sites involve challenging soil conditions, which BELECTRIC has already proven its expertise with during the first four projects for Low Carbon. Given that the soil does not provide enough stability, the usual driving of the piles of the substructure is not sufficient. Following numerous pull-out tests, analysis, and tests with screws, BELECTRIC decided on a special substructure variant. By using screws that can be removed easily and without residue, the company helps preserve the health of the soil.

“We are proud that Low Carbon has placed its trust in us to now implement a total of eight joint projects. Their commitment to creating 20 Gigawatt of new renewable energy by 2030 aligns well with our own ambitious goals. We look forward to expanding this strategic partnership and working together in markets even beyond the Netherlands”, adds Thorsten Blanke, Managing Director at BELECTRIC.

BELECTRIC constructs solar farm on ash settling pond in Saxony

  • Start of construction for a 17 megawatt solar power plant in Böhlen in Saxony (Germany)
  • Plant to be built on the site of an industrial tailings pond
  • Complicated ground conditions with construction rubble and ash from a coal-fired power plant

Kolitzheim (Germany) – For its customer LEAG and their project developer EP New Energies, BELECTRIC installs a solar farm on the site of an industrial tailings pond. The photovoltaic system is designed specifically for the complex soil conditions of the area.

In Böhlen, district of Leipzig, the German solar company BELECTRIC has started constructing a 17 MWp solar power plant. The system consists of around 30,000 modules and will supply almost 6,000 households with green electricity. A special feature is the area on which the solar farm is being built. It is the site of a tailings pond for brown coal, which is located directly on the area of a former opencast mine. The settling, corrosive soil with construction rubble and ash from the coal-fired power plant in the subsoil requires intensive planning. “In order to design the solar farm specifically for the special requirements of the area, we carried out static tests early on and took soil samples», explains Martin Kunz, responsible Project Manager at BELECTRIC. “The construction of the electrical power line poses another challenge. It runs through the landfill area and is ultimately connected to the medium voltage in the cable cellar of the neighbouring coal-fired power plant. This was possible thanks to the many years of experience of our AC team.”

When constructing the open-space system, there is a special sensitivity towards animal protection. For example, certain areas are exempt from construction works to protect the native sand lizard. At the same time, flower strips and stone-wood piles are formed. They will provide shelter for the lizards or blindworms. The commissioning of the plant is planned for the first half of 2023.

“The construction of the Böhlen solar power plant marks another milestone in the transformation process of LEAG towards a renewable energy company, while EP New Energies is supporting with its project development. Despite the complex conditions related to the ground, but also the requirements of nature conservation, we can now start the construction phase at full speed without any major delays in project delivery”, says Florian Beyer, Project Manager Renewables at EP New Energies.

“We are glad that LEAG and EP New Energies have chosen us as their partner for the construction of this exciting solar farm”, adds Thomas Dorsch, Head of Sales Germany at BELECTRIC. “This is our first joint project – and it will certainly not be the last.”
